Immersion Cooling Metrics Documentation
This documentation outlines the comprehensive metrics used to monitor and evaluate immersion cooling systems. All metrics follow a standardized collection and reporting schedule with raw data collected at 1-minute intervals and aggregated into hourly averages for weekly reporting. The metrics cover various aspects including efficiency, thermal performance, resource management, operations, financial impact, and environmental considerations.
Measurement Protocol
- Raw data collected continuously (1-minute intervals)
- Data aggregated into hourly averages
- Weekly reports generated using standardized methods
- All sensors calibrated according to specified schedules
Core Efficiency Metrics
Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)
Ratio of total facility power to IT equipment power. Measured as weekly average from hourly data points with a target range of 1.0-1.1. Requires total facility power draw, IT equipment power draw, and cooling system power draw measurements.
pueWater Usage Effectiveness (WUE)
Weekly water usage (L) divided by IT equipment energy (kWh). Target range is < 0.5 L/kWh. Requires monitoring of water makeup volume, evaporation loss, and IT equipment energy consumption.
wueCooling System Efficiency Ratio (CSER)
Ratio of cooling capacity to cooling system power. Target range is > 20. Calculated from heat removed, pump power, and heat exchanger fan power measurements.
cserThermal Performance Metrics
Temperature Rise Across Components (ΔT)
Difference between outlet and inlet temperatures. Target range < 15°C. Requires monitoring of inlet fluid temperature, outlet fluid temperature, and min/max temperature events.
delta_tTemperature Uniformity Index (TUI)
Measure of temperature variation across components. Formula: TUI = (T_max - T_min) / T_avg. Target range < 0.1. Calculated from maximum, minimum, and average component temperatures.
tuiThermal Resistance (θ)
Temperature difference between component and fluid per unit of power (°C/W). Target range < 0.1 °C/W. Requires component temperature, fluid temperature, and component power measurements.
thermal_resistanceResource Management Metrics
Fluid Loss Rate (FLR)
Rate of cooling fluid loss over time. Target range < 0.1% of total volume per week. Calculated from initial volume, final volume, and continuous level monitoring.
flrHeat Recovery Efficiency (HRE)
Ratio of heat reused to total heat rejected. Target range > 80%. Requires measurement of heat reused for other purposes and total heat rejected by system.
hreOperational Metrics
System Availability (SA)
Percentage of time the system is operational. Formula: SA = (Total Time - Downtime) / Total Time × 100. Target range > 99.99%. Calculated from total operational time, system downtime, and incident logs.
system_availabilityMaintenance Cost Ratio (MCR)
Ratio of maintenance costs to total operating costs. Target range < 0.15. Based on maintenance costs, total operating costs, and labor hours.
mcrFinancial Metrics
Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
Weekly cost calculation including CAPEX amortization, OPEX, and decommissioning costs. Formula: Weekly TCO = (CAPEX/52) + Weekly OPEX + (Decommissioning Cost/520). Includes initial system cost, installation cost amortization, energy costs, maintenance costs, fluid replacement costs, and labor costs.
tcoReturn on Investment (ROI)
Weekly percentage return calculation. Formula: Weekly ROI = (Weekly Benefits - Weekly Costs) / (Initial Investment/52) × 100. Target range > 0.5% weekly (>25% annually). Based on energy savings, operational benefits, initial investment, and weekly operating costs.
roiEnvironmental Impact Metrics
Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE)
Ratio of CO2 emissions to IT equipment energy usage (kgCO2/kWh). Target range < 0.5 kgCO2/kWh. Requires monitoring of total facility CO2 emissions and IT equipment energy consumption.
cueEnergy Reuse Effectiveness (ERE)
Measure of energy efficiency accounting for reused energy. Formula: ERE = (Total Energy - Reused Energy) / IT Equipment Energy. Target range < 0.9. Calculated from total energy consumption, reused energy, and IT equipment energy.
